Dear MDAFP Members,

As the days grow shorter and the back-to-school season begins, it's a timely reminder for us to focus on how we, as family physicians, can actively contribute to the health and well-being of our communities. The return to school is an excellent opportunity for us to engage with local groups to educate and support our neighbors in a variety of important areas.

First and foremost, we should prioritize discussions on vaccine health. This is a crucial time to ensure that students are up to date on their immunizations, particularly as they return to more crowded environments. Consider partnering with local schools or parent-teacher organizations to provide information sessions or vaccine clinics.

Another critical area is pre-participation physicals for student-athletes. These exams are not just a requirement but an opportunity to detect potential health issues early and promote overall wellness. Alongside these physicals, let’s encourage the use of AEDs on the field and in schools. It's also vital that coaches are encouraged to take CPR training – skills that could save lives in emergency situations.

Additionally, this season is perfect for promoting good sleep habits and active lifestyles. Our children and students need our support in these areas, and we can lead by example. Encourage parents to monitor their children's sleep patterns, especially as the academic year ramps up, and to foster a love of physical activity. A simple walk or hike can do wonders for both physical and mental health.

As family physicians, we also have a role in supporting teachers and students, particularly in monitoring for learning challenges or developmental delays. Let’s make it a point to connect with educators and offer our insights and assistance where we can.

In the spirit of education, I’m pleased to announce that we are currently accepting proposals for our Winter Refresher. This event is a wonderful opportunity to share your knowledge with your peers and help shape the future of family medicine. Personally, I feel a strong commitment to education, and I am deeply grateful to the mentors who have guided me throughout my career. Now, it’s our turn to give back by sharing our expertise with others.

I’m also excited to introduce our first MDAFP ultrasound course, a fantastic opportunity to learn about point-of-care ultrasound. This course is tailored for those who may not have received this training during their education and for those looking to expand their skills. Whether you’re learning for the first time or seeking to train others, this is an invaluable tool for your practice. Remember, every skill has a starting point – take the leap and begin your journey!

As we transition from summer to fall, I encourage everyone to take advantage of the remaining warm days. Get outside, breathe in the fresh air, and perhaps explore a trail or two. If you’re looking for a recommendation, I suggest spending a day or two hiking in Shenandoah – it’s the perfect way to recharge.

Wishing you all a productive and enjoyable start to the school year. Let’s continue to nurture and support our communities, especially our young learners.
