President's Corner

November 2025

Fighting medical misinformation is now a top priority for family physicians. Educating patients to make the best decisions for their health has always been central to our mission, but today it is more critical than ever.

In the past, misinformation often came from fringe sources or late-night infomercials. Now, we face a far more troubling challenge: misleading statements from government officials, agencies, and even major media outlets.

Recent announcements questioning the use of acetaminophen during pregnancy and altering the pediatric vaccine schedule directly contradict decades of strong, evidence-based research.

Acetaminophen remains the safest option for treating fever and pain during pregnancy. Likewise, delaying childhood immunizations increases the risk of missed vaccines and leaves children vulnerable to preventable, and often, devastating diseases.

MDAFP and AAFP are actively pushing back against non–evidence-based recommendations through social media campaigns, online resources, direct engagement with health agencies, and partnerships with other medical organizations.

But our most powerful weapon against misinformation is YOU. As a family physician, you are one of the most trusted voices in your community. Your conversations with patients, neighbors, and friends have the power to shape decisions and improve lives.

I am asking you to go one step further:

  • Speak out publicly: write an op-ed for your local paper, share evidence-based updates on social media, or offer to speak at schools, PTAs, faith communities, and civic groups.
  • Host a free webinar or information session for your patients and neighbors.
  • Join MDAFP’s Public Health or Governmental Advocacy Committees to be part of organized action.

Family physicians are the most trusted source of medical information in our communities. Let’s use that trust to make sure accurate, evidence-based guidance is heard and followed.

Thank you for everything you do each day to protect and improve the health of the families you serve.

Together, we can make a difference.

Sincerely,

Amar Duggirala, DO, MPH, FAAFP
