June 2024

June is a wonderful reminder of the start of new physician careers, and we are excited to welcome those who have chosen to dedicate their time and talents to the practice of family medicine. As experienced members, it is our responsibility to be kind, patient, and inspiring to these new physicians. Let us remember what it was like to be in their shoes and make every effort to invigorate their passions and support them in any way we can.

Our recent annual National Conference networking dinner was a great success, filled with motivated young students who will be attending their first national medical conference. It was refreshing to hear how many of them have been profoundly influenced by the relationships family physicians build with patients. These connections are at the heart of what we do, and it’s inspiring to see the next generation embracing this core aspect of family medicine.

I am also pleased to announce that we have been awarded funding for a public health project that will enable Maryland residents to collaborate more closely and work together more regularly. Their project will benefit all members with an education event at the end of the project.

Throughout the summer into fall, our Academy leadership will be visiting all our residency programs to engage with our youngest members and provide insight into the immense value of being part of the Academy. These visits are a wonderful opportunity to connect, share knowledge, and build a stronger community.

As we focus on supporting our medical students and residents to help build and strengthen the family medicine workforce, I encourage you to also take time for yourselves and your families this summer. Go on that adventure you’ve always dreamed of, enjoy the outdoors, and exercise while the weather is still pleasant. I look forward to hearing about all your summer adventures! Please share your experiences with us by posting or tagging us on Instagram #maryland_afp.

Thank you for your dedication and hard work. Together, we continue to make a difference in the lives of our patients and our community.
