April 2024

As the vibrant blooms of May remind us of the storied Preakness Stakes, soon to celebrate its 149th running at the historic Pimlico Race Course, we too are navigating the exciting first turns in our strategic plan.

We continue to work on making strides, particularly in addressing one of our critical discussions with the American Academy of Family Physicians—increasing our membership engagement, especially among physicians newly graduated from residency. It is crucial that we remind these new physicians that their membership extends far beyond the payment of dues. Being part of the MDAFP is about value, camaraderie, and support. It offers a voice for family medicine physicians across Maryland, advocating for our interests and advancing our profession.

Our legislative team has been tirelessly working on key issues such as easing prior authorizations, reforming non-compete clauses for physicians, and regulating physician associates. These changes are not just legislative victories; they are enhancements to our practice environment, allowing us to better serve our patients and community.

Our strength as an Academy comes from our membership. The changes we champion are successful because of our collective voice. The MDAFP stands as a testament to what we can achieve together.

Moreover, the Academy Executive Committee is actively involved in planning committees assisting in developing various programs that support and promote new physician practices, especially in underserved areas of Maryland. These initiatives not only help alleviate healthcare deserts but also provide financial backing to those willing to serve where they are needed most.

As we look to the future, let us draw inspiration from the enduring spirit of the Preakness Stakes—striving for excellence and embracing the challenges of the race. Together, we will continue to make great strides for family medicine in Maryland.
