The training requirement is for prescribers of controlled substances in schedules II, III, IV, and V to complete a one-time, eight-hour training prior to their first registration or renewal of their DEA license.

  • The requirement goes into effect on June 27, 2023, so:
    • if your DEA renewal date is between now and June 26, 2023, you will not need to complete the training until you renew your license the next time.
    • If your DEA renewal date is after June 27, 2023, or later, you will need to complete the training requirement before your next renewal.
  • Some past trainings count toward the requirement, including those in classroom settings, seminars at professional society meetings, virtual offerings, and more. You can learn more about compliant trainings on the AAFP website.
  • The AAFP offers training that meets this requirement. Currently the comprehensive substance use disorder on-demand CME is compliant. In the coming weeks, the AAFP will release a free training that will meet the MATE Act requirement.
